With the exception of one, we are bringing 6 practitioners in their core area and I would like to give you some background about them.

Strategies for Successful Equities Investing

I have read Ms Teh Hooi Leng’s work in Business Times for a long time.

I am sure many of the older folks would remember her works as her articles showed a newbie like myself how horrible looking stocks, when viewed as a whole, can perform very well.

Back in that dark period of 2001 and 2003, it is eye opening to see the returns of small cap portfolios based on dividend yield, price to book and price to earnings being pit against each other. That have been my staple diet without any blogs.

She is starting her fund, Inclusif Value Fund, based upon the quantitative value methodologies. She must be rather confident in her methodology as there is no base fee for the fund and its purely based on performance fee.

In this talk, we brought her to give the case for investing in stocks:

  • Why equities
  • Ways to get higher than buy-and-hold index returns
  • Where is the market now

The Art of Scuttlebutt

My friend Elvin Hayden Liang was once an accountant, then a remiser, now a money manager.

He writes at Epsilon Luxury and have taken hiatus for some time. Honestly, he shouldn’t because these past years have been rather volatile for him and I am sure there are much experience that he could share for us to learn about.

One article in the past that benefited a lot of people from his remiser days was tapping upon your SRS account to super-charge your retirement.

Elvin have been one of those that was able to grasp the concepts of technical analysis and the fundamental side of things.

Some questions on your mind is how do you resolve the voodoo art of technical analysis and the fundamental side of things? You could try asking him.

His talk will be centering on the fundamental side of things, specifically scuttlebutting.

This phrase was made famous by Philip Fisher on how he goes in deep to prospect on the company he is interested in to validate his investment thesis, or suss out potential risks that we may not be able to find on the internet.

Specifically, how do you talk your way into getting more information than the average fundamental investors?

This is crucial because building up conviction or losing conviction, could mean a change in your position sizing, your stop losses and your tolerance of volatility.

Master your Mind, Master the Market

Joel represents one of the investment brokerage firm. While he is a broker he is also licensed to do financial planning. You can read his stuff at Mr Finance Savvy.

He is like Elvin, the new breed of investors who tends to be schooled in both systems.  They are quite adapt to learn and understand the systems, find out its strengths and weakness and then experiment with them.

This time round, he should be sharing the systems behind that of a professional trader from his perspective:

  • The concept of how the stock market operates
  • The psychology of a professional trader
  • How to ignite and accelerate your financial objectives
  • How to systematically plan your investments and trades

So what you get is a mesh of how the high level wealth building idea gets integrated with the actual trading portion of things.

How to use the 3 Musketeers of REITs to find Strong REITs

I always know Kenny in the finance space as a technical analyst first, but it is only later on that he started imparting his quantitative models for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) to his readers.

If you have seen the bubble graph above, it belongs to Kenny!

Kenny conducts regular courses on REIT investing, and he has his own thinking and systems when it comes to REITs.

Thus he is one of the best person to cover this area of investing.

He will talk about:

  • Who are the 3 Musketeers of REITs and how they can help you avoid common mistakes REITs investors make
  • Simple and free online tools that cut down your REITs research efforts to mere minutes

7 Deadly Sins of Singapore Property Buyers

When my good friend was about to rush into property investing head on, I tried to reason with him to get his bearings right and find out how property investing is done.

One of the books I introduced to him was Vina’s book The No B.S Guide to Property Investment – Dirty Truths and Profitable Secrets to Building Wealth Through Properties.

That has helped steadied his speculative mind and refined how he look at property investment and the art of prospecting properties.

Vina writes at Property Soul. And she writes very well.

The thing about Vina is that she focus a lot on the nuances of property prospecting that is seldom talked about.

Like me, she tends to focus on bringing out the risks part of the narrative.

If you want to know how she look at a private property purchase, check out her review of Queen’s Peak.

We have a property market that have been languishing for 4 years.

So how does she see the situation now?

She will also share on:

  • What are the common mistakes of first-time buyers of private properties?
  • How the good nature of Singaporeans is being exploited in property purchase?

Identify Market Trends the George Soros way

For those of us in the finance writing space, we know about Xeo Lye for some time.

Xeo writes at Xeolyenomics.

He is the co-founder of Capital Gains Studio, which publish the board game based on economics and money Wongamania.

He also have 14 years of experience in portfolio management and financial advisory.

Meeting up with Xeo always gives us insight on how he sees the macro economic situation will play out and the gossip in the financial advisory space.

The Global Macro picture fits very prominently in how he manages money. For someone who manages money this way, how does he see the markets now?

How should you make use of the global macro news to augment your wealth building system:

  • Understand the concept behind Global Macro investing and how George Soros invest
  • Learn about economic cycle, some of the recent economic news and their implications
  • Find out how to interpret economic trends and apply them to your investing

Summary

We hope we didn’t leave any stone unturned here.

In one afternoon, you get to interact with a panel of practitioners, building wealth through various methods.

We also have 3 practitioners who are immersed in both the fundamental side and the technical side. If you have that burning question of which is better, which one makes money, they are the best people to ask.
